The Vagina's Natural Protection

The vagina is the canal leading from the opening in the vulva to the cervix of the uterus. It is also referred to as the birth canal.

A healthy vagina has natural protective mechanisms that inhibit the growth of bad bacteria.

Women have a natural gift to care lavishly. This is why they nurture and protect their loved ones with so much passion. As intensely as a woman protects those she loves, her intimate area also does the same thing for itself. The only difference though is that the vagina needs a lot more help in its self-preservation because it is extremely delicate and sensitive.

Your vagina has a natural protective layer which is acidic in nature, making it effective in preventing infection. This protective layer is maintained by an acidic environment produced when lactobacilli (a good bacteria) breaks down the glycogen (starch) contained in the secreted vaginal mucus. The broken-down glycogen then produces lactic acid (or milk acid) which keeps the vaginal pH at its most natural balanced state. This low pH (low pH = high acidity, high pH = low alkalinity) environment, in turn, allows the growth of lactobacilli and inhibits the presence of harmful bacteria.

To put it simply, your vagina takes care of itself: its walls continually produce secretions to provide lubrication, to cleanse it, and maintain its proper acidity to prevent infection.

Functions of Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is very vital in protecting your intimate area. For one, it decreases the pH in the vagina, increasing the acidity and in turn creating a favorable environment for the desirable microbial balance. This kind of pH-friendly environment enables the growth of lactobacilli and helps maintain an effective cycle of the vagina’s acidic protective layer.
